Academics

The Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus (called BTU for short) is the only technical university in the State of Brandenburg. This progressive institution was only founded in 1991 and currently enrolls around 5,000 students, with 20% from other countries. It has four main faculties offering thirty-two programs. BTU is a university of short distances. Student residences, lecture halls, dining and sport facilities, clubs and the library are all close at hand. Downtown Cottbus is only a ten-minutwe walk away. Many language courses and the „Tandem“ Project are offered to help international students gain the linguistic skills and cultural understanding to adapt to their new home.

BTU has several degree programs with a very international focus. Thus, these programs are especially attractive to international students and we believe that students could greatly benefit from these programs as exchange students. Courses are typically taught in German but there are also several programmes taught in English:

  • Environmental and Resource Management (http://www-1.tu-cottbus.de/environment/ ) (Programme taught in English)
  • World Heritage Studies ( http://www.tu-cottbus.de/whs/ ) (Programme taught in English)
  • Electrical Power Engineering (Programme taught in English)
  • Process Engineering & Plant Design (Programme taught in English)
  • Environmental Technologies (Programme taught in English)

Housing

The Studentenwerk offers in Cottbus six dormitories with one room apartments or single rooms in two- to five room apartments in various sizes. It is relatively easy to obtain a dorm room at BTU Cottbus. Rent ranges from 160 to 320 Euros per month. The rooms are furnished, are close to the campus and internet access is usually available. The rents also include attendent expenses such as electricity.

Location

Cottbus is a city of about 100,000 residents, not far from the Polish border close to Dresden and Berlin. The Spree Forest, a large Biosphere Reserve and one of Europe´s unique wetlands, makes the countryside surrounding Cottbus particularly attractive. This is also where the Sorbian people, a minority Slavic group, live among the small waterways and canals only a few kilometers north of the city. The street signs and information are written in both German and Sorbian, a language similar to Polish. Sorbian people and their traditions are widespread throughout the city and environs.

BTU is proud of its integration of students originating from more than 92 nations and cultures. The small university community, the excellent infrastructure and the close relationship between the academic staff and student community, should make Cottbus an automatic choice and destination.
