Every spring semester, the German Department stages a play that is directed by a graduate student who is assisted by an undergraduate student. The play (GERM 322) carries 3 credit hours and is usually performed at the end of April. It is sponsored by the Max Kade Foundation and has attracted huge crowds in recent years.

Written between 1890 and 1891, Frühlings Erwachen was a controversial theatrical production because it presented socially unacceptable material for the time it was written involving death, abortion, masturbation and sexuality. Often, the production was banned due to the nature of its contents. We believe that this work of art is still relevant today and displays the same issues that perpetually present themselves in our own society. Lack of knowledge, discussion, and sharing of ideas has inhibited the ability of social growth and healthy sexual relationships. These discussions between kids and young teens still occur today, and we believe the play to be highly relevant to our own time, even 100 years after its release.
